Spiritual Parenting Retreat by Vivek ji and Vilasini ji, November 9-10, 2019
On Nov 8 and 9 of 2019, families of Greater Sacramento had the fortune of being part of the first-ever weekend retreat at Triveni, Chinmaya Mission, Sacramento. During the weekend retreat, two dedicated Acharyas covered various aspects of parenthood from a spiritual perspective.  In one of his sessions, Vivek ji presented the 6 sutras of social media usage.  This piece was developed and documented by Vivek ji himself.  These sutras were written as a guiding principle to prevent overuse/misuse of phone/social media; a growing issue across several age groups in our times.
In another session, Vilasini Ji cross-examined in great detail a few examples from the book 'How to Talk So That Children Listen…’ by Adele and Elaine.  In a rush to go through the entire book, sometimes parents rush and flip through the pages without immersing in the book.  This session was quite the opposite.  Vilasini Ji came prepared with her presentation slides listing a few of her carefully picked examples from the book.  She held conversations, directing parents to pause and reflect at the multiple ways to handle each scenario; and the possible gamut of feelings running in the minds of both parents and kids while simulating those scenarios.  These exercises facilitated parents to broaden their myopic view of parenting, to include kids' perspectives into these real-life situations.
During the day, while parents were participating in guided meditation sessions or contributing to the group discussions, several Bala Vihar volunteers were working nonstop throughout the day; (a few since five in the morning); to provide a steady supply of nutritious meals and snacks.  Most items were cooked fresh at the venue.  Care was taken to serve families with dietary needs (such as vegan or other preferences) alternate yet equally super delicious dishes at each meal.
The afternoon soccer sessions were a look forward to as well!  It was an eye-opener how parents could throw a hundred percent of themselves into the strenuous game with no prior experience yet with all their enthusiasm, despite those heavy meals!  Vivek ji would constantly favor the losing team using a mixed bag of strategies.  When all other strategies failed, he would run at the speed of the wind, leap to kick the ball mid-air and make it fly across the entire field, close enough to strike a goal!
Each day would end with a beautiful garland of melodious bhajans strung by Indu Vashist ji and several Bala Vihar students.
The parenting retreat at Chinmaya Mission Sacramento was extremely engaging and thought-provoking.  That weekend, as the parents immersed themselves in a flawlessly planned and executed memorable retreat; Bharati ji and the Chinmaya Sacramento Team's months of behind the scenes efforts to put this together clearly showed up in every aspect of the program.
Deepti Sharan is a parent, and sevika at Chinmaya Triveni, Sacramento.  Her family of five, parents and 3 children were active part of the Spiritual Retreat.

Evolution of an Omnivore Into A Vegan

Evolution of an Omnivore Into A Vegan - as written back in 2017
**********

I was born into a meat-eating family. Back in the UK, my tween birthday celebrations usually meant a trip to McDonald's for a mouth-watering treat of fish and chips. Fast forward 13 years to India. After returning to India, my mommy to had gone back to insisting me adopting a vegetarian lifestyle. But just like most teenagers, I was way too intelligent than my own mom to decide what was best for me. In 2001 I met my cousin after several years. He was pursuing his Ph.D. in the US and was visiting India on a vacation. I was utterly surprised, that he did not introduce meat, fish or eggs into his diet, even being so away from home, even when his lifelong vegetarian parents would never had known a thing about his newly adopted meet eating habits (if he choose not to share with them), even when he had all the chance to 'enjoy' his life, but choose not to. Piyush Bhaiya's revelation to problems such as world hunger, global warming, linked to increasing meat consumption and several other deep thoughts, backed by reasoning, behind a conscious decision of continuing a vegetarian diet, blew me away. I quit meat then and there.

Fast forward several more years later, a mom myself and a software engineer at Nordstrom; I came in touch with a vegan ambassador online, through a common friend. The word and the concept were brand new for me. So for almost a year I would glance at his and other 2000 members' posts in a vegan group created to connect Vegans and rather choose to ignore their claims. As was evident from several posts, several of them were unrelated to each other and had by chance, accidentally or otherwise come across this vegan group. At the same time, quite unusually back then, no one person was endorsing their products. In my eyes, these people had emerged out as 'successful vegan leaders'. Leaders because they had started the journey 20, 30 sometimes 50 years ago; all alone; with occasionally a few being blessed with a supportive spouse. These people had had the first-hand experience of animal torture, suffering, and premature killings and unlike the majority of us, these people choose to put an end to that gruesome suffering. Their families were ruthless against them, they were made fun of at family gatherings, they faced shame and sometimes isolation too; all because they cared for another living being; who was not somewhere buried deep down in the pyramid of food chain, who was not a profit-making commodity, who had a life and a family of its own and just like humans had a desire to continue to live.

A year of ignoring the posts was a rather long time. In 2011, I finally made a choice to go vegan. Then the question arose - what about my kids? I have grown up with this absurd yet ingrained conation that a human can not stay healthy without cow's milk. My kids were my first priority, as I was responsible for bringing them to this earth. I felt the urge to fulfill their nutritional needs even if that meant at the cost of a calf's life. I felt torn apart between my new ideal world and the world I grew up in. Gradually thought some strong vegan activists such as Richa Hingle, and more, I was put in touch with some very fine second-generation vegans and other local vegan families with kids older than mine. Knowing that with sufficient intake of greens, fruits, and nuts my kids could not only stay healthy but could thrive; I was now all set on this vegan journey never once to look back, repent or regret.

When you send out positive energies of love and compassion out there in the world to those 50+ male calves, who are being killed every second worldwide; and to their grieving cow moms, they reciprocate in the most unseen, unimaginable lovable ways.

Today with no dieting, shamefully no exercise, and 40 lbs lesser. With knees that don't need surgery for growing pain; with a deodorant-less, if not exactly fragrant, but certainly bearable natural body scent; and with a better glowing skin that before; I am so proud that despite all the resistance from the closest loved ones in my life; I choose this path. I have a 7-year-old boy. With close to 20 ear infections before his age 2, my home had converted into a mini dispensary (mini-pharmacy). After going door to door visiting several doctors from western medicines to alternate therapy, and hearing the same advice over and again, we finally had him off of dairy milk for several months; only to have his ear infections come back when we restarted it. This was long ago I had heard the word vegan. With the cow's milk gone, so are gone all those painful ear infections. He wears thick frames though. My beautiful daughter, now 4.5 years is vegan since birth. She is a strong brat. Sadly since she has alopecia, there is no month where I don't to hear that her autoimmune condition (alopecia) or my son's thick glasses are due to my bad food choices of not giving them the much-needed cow's milk. I equate this stupid logic, to the same torture that women face in India from their mothers-in-law, for delivering a girl instead of a boy - regarding the science of chromosomes.

There are people to throw all kinds of logic out there. Calcium logic, protein logic, plant pain logic, animal hierarchy logic, Krishna loved butter logic, but you are driving and also creating pollution logic. I have tried to answer several of those in my previous blogs. People who could see a connection, have approached me, tried to change their lifestyle and take an approach where animals are left alone!

The ground reality will always remain the same. I can't disassociate myself from the pain of a cow. She is a mom and so am I. I don't see a difference. But I do see several similarities between myself and those two Indian females, also very near and dear to me, who faced a lot of opposition for choosing a boy out of their caste. In the end, their love won overall odds. These two strong women, came out victorious. In spite of their family's extreme opposition, they got to choose and marry the love of their life as their life partner.

In Geeta, Krishna says, "Focus on your doing, rather than bothering about their results as you would expect them to be; as the outcome is not in your hands". I try and try harder to follow it in principle, yet at the same time, I anxiously wait for the day when my love for veganism - my life's third love (after my partner and kids) comes out victorious. I pray to Shivji to give me strength that after fighting all odds, I like those two strong women, I too get an acceptance from that small bunch of people closet to my heart.

Oh The Joys of Being Parent to Three Kids

Googled and Found These Lovely Snippets over the internet!

* When one kid is gone, it feels like a vacation.

Just as adding a third kid quadruples the work, taking one away for a day cuts the work by three-fourths. (I don’t understand the math, I just live it.) Send one kid on a sleepover, and you’ll wonder why you ever thought having two kids was difficult

* Sometimes you have to tell them all to stop talking. Just stop. Stop talking. No more sound from any more mouths. “If anyone opens their mouth and says a word for the next 15 minutes, they will be banned from all electronics for a week.” True story.

* Relief via Partner. When you have one child and your spouse/partner takes that child out for a while, they are the savior who is giving you a break. When you have two children, if your spouse takes one of the kids out, at least they’re pulling their weight with 50 percent of the load. When you have three children, if your spouse takes just one of your kids out, go run after him/her. They are slinking away, shirking their duties — and should be punished accordingly.

* Vehicle Archaeology. Sure, parents of two may have found a couple of disgusting items in the depths of their car cushions, perhaps even fossilized and unidentifiable ones every once in a while. But only parents of three or more will find things so frightening they require a police inquiry.

* School Forms. We imagine that the sheer volume of school forms, art projects, and other papers that come home each day with two children can sometimes feel unmanageable. With three children, however, these stacks of paper will actually mate with each other and multiply while you are sleeping, to the point where old math worksheets will not only become your companions at the dinner table but your pillows in bed, your washcloths in the kitchen and your loofahs in the shower.

*What are Millets?

-->Millets are a group of highly variable small-seeded grasses, widely grown around the world as cereal crops or grains for fodder and human food. They do not form a taxonomic group, but rather a functional or agronomic one. Millets are important crops in the semi-arid tropics of Asia and Africa (especially inIndia, Nigeria, and Niger), with 97% of millet production in developing countries.[1] The crop is favored due to its productivity and short growing season under dry, high temperature conditions.
